Fred Jelinek memorial service set for Friday at Homewood
The Center for Language and Speech Processing and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are holding a service to remember and celebrate the life of Fred Jelinek on Friday, Nov. 5. Jelinek, the Julian Sinclair Smith Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Center for Language and Speech Processing, died on Sept. 14.
The service will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in Mason Hall Auditorium and will be followed by a reception/dinner. Members of the Whiting School community are invited to attend.
A pioneer in his field, Jelinek devised the statistical methods that enable computers to “understand” human speech and translate languages. At the service, friends and colleagues who represent important stages in his distinguished career—at Cornell, IBM Research and Johns Hopkins—will pay tribute to his life and accomplishments.
